Everyone wants to land their dream job. However, some job seekers are more willing to put in the effort to achieve it. It's not for lack of wanting, but for misperceptions around the art of job hunting. Some seekers go to great lengths to ensure they get the job they deserve, while others rely on luck.
As an example, sometimes job seekers submit resumes to as many job postings as possible instead of crafting a detailed job hunting plan of action. This way, they can cover a wider territory of hiring managers in less time. We commonly mistake this tendency for a good strategy–but it is merely a quick way to hit the mark while preserving our self-confidence. We tend to think, "if it doesn't happen, there's nothing that I could have done differently. At least I'm getting my name out there.” In the name of self-preservation, we trust luck more than we do our own capabilities. It's simply easier to accept setbacks if we eliminate our own actions from the outcome. If we carefully plan out our job search, we should remind ourselves that job hunting setbacks are not personal failures so much as they are clues to revealing the next step in the right direction.
The Mental Hot Spot is accountability. Regardless of where your personal job hunting efforts lead, all seekers need to be responsible for their own job hunting efforts. Nothing great that is sustainable is ever achieved through luck. Accountability leads to sustainability, and helps ensure your efforts won't yield temporary results, but long term professional rewards.
Just imagine how good you'll feel when you accept a great job because you took the time to plan out what you wanted, how you were going to achieve it, and why you wanted it.
