| I have recently graduated from a computer science program, and I am looking to enter the information technology field. Although I do have previous work experience and additional education, it is within the field of accounting. In addition to this, I took some time off during my education for personal reasons, and I feel my work experience and gaps in my resume may discourage me from achieving my new found passion for IT. How can I effectively market myself while competing with other job seekers who have 3-5 years experience? |

| There are quite a few things that you can do. First, be confident in your career decisions—although accounting may have been a passion of yours at one time, it has obviously changed and your interest now lies within IT. Express this to the hiring manager with conviction. Secondly, investigate volunteer work and/or internships you can complete to gain additional knowledge in the field. Experience (whether paid or unpaid) will help you compete in the market. Lastly, when explaining to the hiring manager why you have gaps in your work history, be honest. It is quite appropriate to list ‘personal reasons’ for taking time off, but don’t get into the details—practice your interviewing skills with friends and/or family. |

Challenge Your Mind
If you’re stressed out at work, and you’re not sure how to mitigate the feelings of anxiety to avoid being overwhelmed, take time for yourself during the day. Rather than simply having a coffee on your break, work on a crossword or write in a daily journal. Getting your brain thinking of something other than work and challenging your mind will provide an outlet for your stress, and you’ll feel refreshed when you return to your desk.
