Q. Dear Bill,
I was working for my employer for over 12 years, and our organization recently lost 2 major clients to our competitors. As a result of financial cutback, I was terminated alongside 6 other colleagues—this came as a complete surprise. I haven't had to job search in quite a while, and I am totally overwhelmed; where should I start?
~ Back On The Market
A. Dear Back On The Market,
It's absolutely normal to feel surprised and discouraged after being terminated from a position; especially if you've invested so much time and effort. First things first, set out a financial plan, and communicate with those who are close to you as this may affect them too. If you want to remain in the field you were in, use your industry knowledge and apply to competitors. After all, you may get lucky with the ones that successfully landed your previous accounts, and you know the business! If you are interested in pursuing other options, do some research to determine the types of roles for which you qualify. Seek advice from friends, family, and career counselors. When you do land something, be sure to stay in contact with those who supported you during the tough times.
~ Bill

Enthusiasm is Key
Individuals with the right attitude will succeed in their career. The same holds true for job hunters. Although the hiring process can be tedious, remember that nothing great was ever accomplished without enthusiasm! If you’ve attended three rounds of interviewing with one company and are asked back for a fourth, stay positive. A sense of eagerness and a display of passion will demonstrate to potential employers that you are serious about working for their company.
